The beautiful weigela ‘Tango’ (Weigela florida) is one of the most striking dwarf varieties, perfect for modern gardens and small spaces. It impresses with its combination of dark, burgundy foliage and vivid carmine‑pink flowers, creating a strong, eye‑catching contrast. Thanks to its compact habit and low maintenance needs, it is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners.

Appearance and characteristics ‘Tango’ is a slow‑growing variety reaching about 80 cm in height and a similar width. It forms a dense, rounded mound that requires no shaping. The leaves are dark purple, sometimes tinged with green, slightly glossy and densely arranged along the stems. The flowers have an intense carmine‑pink colour with a burgundy hue, are bell‑shaped and grouped together, making the shrub look as if it were covered in colourful buds. The contrast between the dark foliage and bright flowers makes ‘Tango’ stand out among other weigela varieties.

Flowering period ‘Tango’ blooms from late May to June, producing numerous flower clusters along the stems. Under favourable conditions, it may bloom again at the end of summer, adding extra ornamental value.

Site and requirements ‘Tango’ grows best:

  • in sunny locations, where the foliage colours intensify,

  • in well‑drained, moderately moist soil,

  • in fertile or slightly acidic substrates.

The plant also performs well in average garden soil, provided it is not too heavy or waterlogged. It is frost‑resistant and tolerant of air pollution, making it suitable for urban gardens.

Pruning and care Since weigela blooms on last year’s shoots:

  • pruning should be done right after flowering,

  • shortening spent shoots encourages denser growth,

  • dead or frost‑damaged branches should be removed in spring.

Thanks to its naturally compact form, ‘Tango’ does not require heavy pruning.

Garden use The weigela ‘Tango’ is a versatile shrub that looks great:

  • in small home gardens,

  • in mixed and flowering borders,

  • in compositions with ornamental grasses, heucheras, salvias and barberries,

  • in rock gardens and heath gardens,

  • in containers on terraces and balconies,

  • as a low hedge or groundcover plant.

Its intense colours contrast beautifully with light walls, stone elements or decorative gravel.
