The beautiful weigela ‘Rumba’ (Weigela florida) is an exceptionally ornamental variety that impresses with abundant flowering and an elegant, upright habit. Its intensely purple‑pink flowers appear at the beginning of June, adding vivid colour accents to the garden. This shrub combines an attractive appearance with low maintenance requirements, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced gardeners.
Appearance and characteristics ‘Rumba’ grows up to about 2 metres in height, with a slightly smaller width.
The inner shoots are stiff and upright,
while the outer ones arch gracefully, giving the shrub a naturally light form.
The leaves are lanceolate, about 10 cm long, and deciduous. Their dark green colour with a subtle reddish tint contrasts beautifully with the flowers. The bell‑shaped flowers, around 2 cm in diameter, have a deep purple‑pink colour and a reddish calyx. They form large clusters of 7 to 21 flowers along last year’s shoots.
Flowering period ‘Rumba’ blooms at the beginning of June, producing very abundant flower clusters. Under favourable conditions, it may bloom again in summer and once more in late September.
Cultivation and requirements ‘Rumba’ is easy to grow and performs well in most gardens. It grows best:
in sunny or lightly shaded locations,
in fertile, well‑drained, moderately moist soil,
in substrates without standing water.
To ensure abundant flowering, prune the shoots right after blooming. The oldest, weakest flowering branches can be shortened or removed. Young plants should be protected for winter, while mature shrubs overwinter well, although severe frost may damage shoots, which should be removed in spring.
Garden use The weigela ‘Rumba’ is highly versatile. It works well:
as a solitary plant,
in groups of ornamental shrubs (recommended spacing approx. 2.5 m),
in compositions with mock orange, viburnum, deutzia or kolkwitzia,
as part of loose hedges,
alongside plants with colourful foliage,
as a backdrop for summer‑flowering perennials.
Thanks to its intense colours and elegant form, ‘Rumba’ is an excellent choice for home gardens, parks and urban green spaces.
