Cornus sanguinea Annie’s Winter Orange is a decorative deciduous shrub known for its intensely orange stems that remain attractive throughout winter. During the growing season the plant displays green foliage which turns yellow and orange in autumn adding a strong colour accent to the garden.
After the leaves fall the bright stems in shades of orange and red become fully visible. These vivid shoots are the main ornamental feature of the variety and make it especially valuable in winter compositions. The shrub reaches around two metres in height and width and forms a dense spreading habit.
It grows best in sunny or lightly shaded positions and in moderately moist fertile soil. It is frost resistant and responds well to rejuvenating pruning which helps maintain the vivid colouring of young stems. Annie’s Winter Orange is suitable as a specimen plant in groups in informal hedges and in naturalistic gardens.
