Pieris japonica ‘Carnaval’ is an evergreen shrub that attracts attention throughout the year with its colorful foliage. In spring, young shoots display an intense red shade with tones of pink and copper, later turning into a rich green with a light, creamy margin. Thanks to this, the plant decorates the garden not only during flowering but also outside the blooming season. It grows slowly, forming a compact, upright habit and reaches around one meter in height and width after many years.

The leaves are leathery, glossy and evenly arranged in the upper parts of the stems, giving the shrub a tidy and elegant appearance. At the end of summer, flower buds form at the shoot tips and open in spring into white, bell-shaped flowers gathered in slightly arching clusters. Although the flowering is not as abundant as in some other varieties, the colorful young foliage makes ‘Carnaval’ highly ornamental. On warm, sunny days the flowers attract bees and bumblebees.

Pieris grows best in acidic, humus-rich and consistently moist soil. It prefers semi-shaded, sheltered locations, ideally facing east or west, where the sunlight is gentle. Due to moderate frost resistance, it requires winter protection in colder regions. Mulching with pine bark helps protect the shallow root system and maintain the proper soil pH.

Care is limited to regular watering and fertilizing with products intended for acid-loving plants. The shrub does not require pruning except for removing damaged or frozen shoots.
