Calamagrostis × acutiflora ‘Overdam’ is a long‑lived, clump‑forming ornamental grass distinguished by its elegant upright habit and two‑toned foliage. It forms dense, vertical clumps about 60 cm wide and reaches 70–100 cm in height during flowering. Thanks to its stable structure and long period of decorative value, it is one of the most versatile grasses for modern and naturalistic gardens. Foliage – light margins and seasonal colour changes The leaves are narrow, long and slightly arching. A characteristic feature of this variety is the white margin on both sides of the leaf blade, clearly visible and contrasting in spring. In summer the colours become softer, and in autumn, during cooler nights, the leaf edges may take on a subtle pink tint, enhancing the plant’s ornamental effect. Inflorescences – from pink plumes to beige seed heads Flowering begins in June. Above the clump rise stiff, upright stems topped with fluffy pink panicles. As they mature, the inflorescences turn beige and remain decorative until winter, often lasting until spring cutting. This makes the grass attractive throughout the entire year. Habit and growth rate ‘Overdam’ grows at a moderate pace, forming compact, orderly clumps that do not lodge even during rain. It is a stable, non‑invasive variety, ideal for plantings requiring structure and rhythm. Cultivation of ‘Overdam’ Position: Best in full sun, but also tolerates light shade. In sunny locations the foliage colours more intensely and flowering is more abundant. Soil: Prefers average, well‑drained, moderately moist soils. It does not tolerate extremely dry or waterlogged sites. It grows more vigorously in fertile soil. Hardiness and care: Fully hardy and does not require winter protection. In early spring, remove the previous year’s dry stems by cutting them low to the ground. Every few years the clump can be rejuvenated by division.
