The European rowan is a medium‑sized tree with an oval crown and relatively fast growth when young. It reaches 8–12 m in height and 4–6 m in width. The leaves are pinnate, intensely green, turning yellow or orange in autumn. In May and June, the tree becomes covered with white flowers gathered in corymbs, which later develop into highly decorative red fruits.

Has low soil requirements. A good species for urban green areas.
