Physalis, known as Cape Gooseberry or Chinese Lantern, is an ornamental plant producing bright orange husks that resemble small lanterns. It forms green slightly hairy leaves and delicate flowers that develop into fruit cases containing edible berries with a sweet-tart flavor. It is valued both for its decorative qualities and culinary uses.
The plant grows best in full sun or light partial shade. It prefers well-drained, moderately moist soil rich in nutrients. It tolerates urban conditions and occasional drought, making it easy to cultivate.
Physalis requires regular watering, especially during active growth. Removing damaged leaves supports healthy development. Fertilization in spring or summer enhances flowering and fruit production. Light support may be helpful when fruits begin to mature.
Cape Gooseberry is excellent as an ornamental plant in gardens, borders and autumn arrangements. Its edible berries can be used in desserts, preserves, salads or as a garnish. It is also suitable for container cultivation.
The plant tolerates changing weather conditions well and is resistant to most diseases and pests. In colder regions it may require protection from early frost to extend the fruiting period.
