This ornamental grass occurs naturally in Central and Northern Europe, mainly on coastal dunes, and more rarely inland. In Poland, it is common along the Baltic Sea, while in other regions it appears as an introduced or cultivated species. It forms dense clumps of arching, shiny, silvery-green leaves, growing up to 100 cm tall. During drought, the leaves curl; bluish, spike-shaped inflorescences appear from May to August and turn brownish in autumn. This grass is very easy to grow. It prefers dry, sunny locations and does not have specific soil requirements. It thrives in poor, light, sandy, well-drained soils. It is highly expansive. Marram grass is used to stabilize sandy dunes and riverbeds. Uses: perennial borders, woodland gardens, along paths, containers and decorative pots, urban greenery.
