Rhododendron Catawbiense Grandiflorum is a classic, highly ornamental variety with large, light‑violet flowers featuring a characteristic marking on the petals. It blooms abundantly from late May to mid‑June, forming dense, rounded flower clusters. The plant is frost‑resistant and suitable for parks, gardens and naturalistic plantings.
Flowering: late May – second half of June
Flowers: light violet, 5–7.5 cm in diameter, with yellow‑brown‑red or olive‑yellow markings; stamens in the colour of the petals; pistil neck darker; inflorescences spherical, dense, 13–15 cm in diameter
Leaves: elongated‑elliptical, dark green, slightly glossy; 10–13 cm long, 3.5–4.5 cm wide; remain on the shoots for many years
Position: semi‑shaded or shaded, sheltered from wind; requires high air humidity
Soil: acidic, moist, humus‑rich
Care: best planting time is April or late September to October; delicate roots allow transplanting even during flowering; mulching and manual weeding required; needs consistently moist soil and regular watering; evening leaf misting is beneficial
Hardiness: very high frost resistance (down to –30°C); young plants require winter protection
Pruning: possible shaping at the boundary of annual growth; the plant regenerates quickly thanks to strong growth and compact habit
