The rhododendron Rasputin is one of the darkest varieties of large-flowered rhododendrons. It is a shrub with moderate growth and a broad, upright habit. Ten-year-old specimens reach approximately 1.2 m in height and 1.5 m in width. It is attractive due to its intense flowering and high frost resistance. This evergreen shrub is often recommended for large garden and park designs. Rhododendrons should be planted in slightly shaded locations, sheltered from the wind. They should be planted in acidic, humus-rich, and well-drained soil. Rhododendrons are planted in the spring and watered regularly.
Flowering: This variety blooms for a long time and abundantly from early May to the end of June. The flowers are light purple with a characteristic large dark purple spot on the upper petal and contrasting white stamens, grouped in broad, semi-spherical clusters. The funnel-shaped petals with slightly wavy edges measure 7 to 8 cm in diameter. The plant's large elliptical, intensely green, and slightly glossy leaves are undoubtedly another decorative feature.
Growing conditions or requirements: Like most rhododendrons, the Rasputin rhododendron requires semi-shaded or shaded locations, moderately moist, humus-rich soils with an acidic pH. Therefore, soil from a heathland mixed with pine or spruce needles is most suitable for growing these shrubs. It is very important to choose sheltered locations protected from northern and eastern winds.
This variety thrives best in air saturated with water vapor, fog, cloudy weather, and moderate temperatures without abrupt fluctuations.
Care: After planting, the shrubs should be watered abundantly. Later, moderate watering is sufficient, as the plant does not tolerate overly wet soil. The Rasputin rhododendron is not demanding, provided it grows in soil with the correct pH. Fertilizing the shrubs is recommended, as it positively affects the number of flowers and new growth. Specialized fertilizers designed specifically for this group of plants should be used.
Application: It is suitable for planting in gardens, parks, or flower beds. It looks most beautiful in colorful compositions created with other rhododendrons and azaleas.
