Quercus robur – Pedunculate Oak
Trees growing in dense stands form a looser, spindle-shaped, irregular crown. The trunk is thick, often branched low. The bark of young trees is smooth, shiny, and brownish; in old trees it becomes thick, dark, and deeply fissured. Leaves are green, lighter underneath, leathery, with 3–6 irregularly arranged rounded lobes. Fruits are acorns in hemispherical cups, grouped in twos or threes on long stalks. This species has high soil requirements. It prefers fresh, deep soils and tolerates temporary flooding. On poor and dry soils, growth is slower. It is a light-loving plant, but in youth tolerates shade. Suitable for planting in parks, residential greenery, and as an avenue tree.
