Molinia caerulea is a grass that forms dense clumps, reaching a height of 0.5 to 1.0 m. It has arching, bicolored leaves with green and yellow-cream stripes. It looks impressive during flowering, as the ornamental flower spikes add lightness and elegance. The inflorescences appear as narrow purple-violet spikes emerging from the foliage in early summer. The plant blooms in summer and early autumn. It is easy to grow but prefers a sunny or semi-shaded position and moist, moderately fertile, slightly acidic soil. Fully frost-hardy. An excellent grass for container cultivation, rock gardens, heather gardens, borders, and planting near water. It also works well in mass plantings in urban landscapes.
