A low, attractive grass that naturally grows on pastures and wastelands in North America. It forms loose clumps of green, narrow, sharply pointed leaves up to 1 cm wide and 10–30 cm long. The leaves turn red in autumn. The low‑set, airy inflorescences have an appealing pink‑purple colour. They appear in August, creating a delicate cloud above the foliage. The grass is tolerant of various soil types but requires well‑drained, warm, dry or moderately moist substrates, in sunny or lightly shaded locations. It is frost‑hardy. Recommended for planting in groups, especially along border edges. Suitable for container cultivation. Perfect for naturalistic gardens, among stones, gravel and other plants adapted to harsher conditions.
