A low-growing, attractive grass that naturally grows on pastures and wastelands in North America. It forms loose clumps of green, narrow, sharply pointed leaves up to 1 cm wide and 10–30 cm long. In autumn, the leaves turn red. The low-set, airy inflorescences are an attractive pink-purple color. They appear in August, forming a decorative cloud above the leaves. This grass tolerates various soil types but requires well-drained, warm, dry or moderately moist substrates and sunny or slightly shaded sites. It is frost-resistant. Recommended for planting in groups, especially along the edges of flower beds. Suitable for container cultivation. Perfectly complements naturalistic gardens, especially against a background of stones, gravel, and other hardy plants.
