Mahonia is a spreading, not very tall, evergreen shrub. Its shape is spreading, irregular, and stiff. The shoots are upright, covered with large, leathery leaves with spiny edges. The leaves are mainly concentrated in the upper parts of the shrub.
Mahonia starts flowering from April to May. The flowers are bright yellow, gathered at the tips of the shoots in racemose inflorescences. After the plant has finished flowering, decorative round fruits of dark blue color are formed.
It is worth knowing that the fruits of Mahonia are edible, except for the seeds, which are toxic. They are eagerly eaten by birds.
The plant should be planted in a semi-shady or shady location. It grows well in slightly moist, fertile, and well-drained soil. It does not tolerate transplanting well because it has a weak and shallow root system.
It does not require pruning, but it is worth gently trimming it after flowering as it becomes more compact.
