Variety characteristics

Common lilac ‘Standard of Lenin’ is a vigorous cultivar known for its strong growth, elegant structure and intensely coloured flowers. The shrub reaches 3–4 meters in height and forms an upright, spreading habit that becomes more impressive with age. The variety was developed in the early twentieth century and has been valued ever since for its durability, resilience and striking blooming. It is long lived, tolerant of changing weather conditions and suitable for home gardens, parks and urban landscapes.

Flowers and blooming

The flowers of ‘Standard of Lenin’ are large and gathered in dense, showy panicles that can reach considerable size. They have a deep purplish violet colour that remains intense even in full sun. Blooming occurs in May and is very abundant. The flowers are fragrant, long lasting and attract pollinating insects. The panicles are heavy, compact and form one of the most decorative features of this cultivar.

Use

‘Standard of Lenin’ performs beautifully as a specimen plant because its flowers create a strong colour accent. It can also be planted in groups, along fences, near pathways or as part of representative compositions. The variety is suitable for private gardens as well as public spaces. Thanks to its tolerance of urban conditions, it grows well in parks and residential greenery.

Care

The plant is easy to grow and does not require complicated maintenance. It prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. It grows best in fertile, moderately moist and well drained soils. Removing spent flowers after blooming improves the appearance of the shrub and supports better flowering in the next season. The variety is frost resistant, drought tolerant and performs well in urban environments. Nursery plants of 90 cm in container C4 establish quickly and begin growing vigorously.
