Common lilac ‘Aucubaefolia’ is a decorative cultivar known for its variegated leaves, which remain green with yellow and cream markings throughout the season. It grows as a large, spreading shrub reaching 2.5–4 meters in height. The leaf pattern resembles aucuba, which inspired the name of the variety.
The flowers are semi double, pale lilac and form long, loose panicles. Blooming occurs from April to May. The flowers are fragrant and attract pollinators. The variety blooms abundantly, although very fertile soils may encourage stronger leaf growth than flowering.
‘Aucubaefolia’ works well as a specimen plant because its variegated foliage creates a strong visual accent. It is suitable for home gardens, parks and urban greenery. It tolerates drought and urban conditions well.
The plant is easy to grow. It prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. It grows best in fertile, humus rich and moderately moist soils, but also manages on poorer soils as long as they are not waterlogged. It is frost resistant and requires minimal maintenance. Removing spent flowers after blooming improves the appearance of the shrub.
