Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum' is a unique and eye-catching ornamental grass variety. Unlike other grasses, it features stunning burgundy-purple foliage and inflorescences. It forms a picturesque cascade of long, narrow green leaves that turn deep burgundy-purple in summer. From July to October, it produces arching flower spikes resembling bottle brushes. These inflorescences are ruby-pink and gradually fade to creamy brown, creating a striking contrast with the dark, nearly black foliage. In Polish conditions, it is grown as an annual because it is not frost-tolerant. However, it can be overwintered indoors in a bright location with above-freezing temperatures and grown as a perennial. It grows up to 90–120 cm tall and 60–70 cm in diameter. It prefers warm, fully sunny spots, moderately moist to moist, humus-rich soils that are rich in calcium and nutrients. Excellent for containers and perennial beds. Also used in floral arrangements—suitable for fresh-cut and dried flower decorations.
