Hydrangea macrophylla 'Libelle' is a medium-sized shrub reaching 1.2–1.8 m in height. It has a loose habit with upright but delicate stems that may sprawl. The leaves are light green, elongated, thick, and glossy. From July to September, it produces flat, white flower heads on last year’s and older shoots. The inflorescences have a fairly regular form and consist of two types of flowers. The center is filled with numerous inconspicuous fertile flowers, which are white-pink or blue depending on soil acidity. Faded flower heads should be removed in autumn or spring. The shrub is not very frost-tolerant but is fairly resistant to diseases and pests. It prefers sheltered sites protected from cold winter winds. Winter protection is recommended. It grows best in fertile, humus-rich, moderately moist, acidic to slightly acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.5) in sunny to semi-shaded locations. This variety is mainly recommended for container cultivation (stored indoors in winter), for home gardens, and for planting individually or in groups – but only in the warmest regions.
