This is an extremely decorative white hydrangea variety. It is exceptional due to its very long blooming period, lasting up to four months, and its beautiful, large inflorescences. The strong, stiff shoots, directed upward, support the large inflorescences so that the shrub does not droop. An additional advantage of the ‘Silver Dollar’ variety is the unusual red color of its shoots. It blooms on current-year shoots, allowing you to enjoy fantastic flowers every year. The variety is robust, disease-resistant, and low-maintenance. It is the most frost-resistant variety grown in Poland. It prefers warm, sunny as well as semi-shaded locations. The soil should be fertile, humus-rich, and slightly moist.
Blooming – a hydrangea variety with a very long blooming period lasting from July until October. During this time, the shrub is adorned with very large inflorescences reaching up to 30 cm in length, composed of four-petaled white sterile flowers. Unlike other bouquet hydrangea varieties, Silver Dollar flowers do not turn pink during blooming. At the beginning of blooming, they are slightly green; at full bloom, they are white-cream and remain so without changing color. The inflorescences are distributed evenly throughout the shrub, giving it the appearance of a garden bouquet. The leaves are medium-sized, smooth, and intensely green.
Maturation and fruiting – not applicable.
Conditions and requirements – this shrub can be planted in both sunny and shady locations. However, it grows best in partly shaded areas. When planted in full sun, it requires adequate soil moisture. It requires humus-rich, moderately moist soils, especially during blooming. Like most garden hydrangea varieties, Silver Dollar should be planted in soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH.
Care – this hydrangea variety is completely resistant to low temperatures, so it does not require winter protection. It is easy to cultivate and highly disease-resistant. Moderate rejuvenation pruning is recommended, ideally every 2–3 years. This helps to regenerate the shrub, stimulate its growth, and achieve abundant inflorescences. For this purpose, in spring or at the end of winter, prune last year’s shoots low at the height of the third node.
Application – the bouquet hydrangea Silver Dollar, thanks to its qualities and uncomplicated cultivation, is ideal for planting in gardens and urban green spaces. It also performs well when grown in containers on balconies and terraces. The flowers are excellent for drying and as cut flowers.
Bouquet hydrangeas look attractive whether planted in groups or individually.
In the garden, Silver Dollar hydrangea creates an impressive combination with tall grasses or tall perennials.
