Lonicera heckrottii ‘Variegata’ is an exceptional climbing plant valued for its variegated foliage and strongly fragrant flowers. It produces long, flexible shoots that can climb supports or spread as groundcover. The flowers change colour as they open — starting in shades of pink and violet, then gradually turning yellow, creating a striking multicolour effect. The plant blooms from May to June.

Its greatest ornament are the variegated leaves: green blades with creamy, wavy margins that give the plant a light and decorative appearance. The semi‑evergreen leaves remain on the stems for most of the year. Mature plants reach 1.5–2 metres, making them ideal for pergolas, fences and walls.

Originating from East Asia, this variety is known for its excellent frost and drought tolerance. It grows best in fertile, humus‑rich, slightly sandy‑loamy and well‑drained soil. In full sun it flowers most abundantly and releases its strongest fragrance.

‘Variegata’ is appreciated not only for its ornamental value but also for its traditional uses. Flowers, leaves and seeds have long been collected for their believed beneficial properties. Flowers are harvested in spring, preferably in the bud stage, while stems are collected in late autumn and winter for drying.

A perfect choice for gardens where fragrance, colour and natural charm are important — ideal for decorating pergolas, arbours, fences and walls with a colourful, scented curtain.
