The Pomeranian honeysuckle 'Nova Serotina' is a perennial climbing plant with multicolored flowers. It grows up to 2 meters in height. The plant climbs supports by wrapping its shoots around them. This variety is characterized by high frost resistance. Its greatest asset is the flowers, typical of the species but with a two-tone coloration – purple-red. The Pomeranian honeysuckle 'Nova Serotina' has an intense fragrance, especially in the evening, and its fruits serve as decoration until winter. The 'Nova Serotina' variety has low requirements, high tolerance to conditions, and undeniable aesthetic value. It prefers a sunny or partially shaded position.
Blooming – At the beginning of June, multicolored, tubular flowers appear on the vines. Collected at the tips of the shoots, they form lush inflorescences. The flower buds are dark purple-red before blooming. In the evenings and at night, the flowers release a strong, pleasant fragrance. The Pomeranian honeysuckle 'Nova Serotina' blooms very profusely from June to July.
The leaves are ovate-elliptic and are arranged alternately on the vines. Not only the flowers of this variety shimmer in various colors. The young shoots initially take on a pinkish hue, later turning green. The leaves are dark green on top and light blue underneath.
Ripening and fruiting – Cherry-red inedible fruits appear at the turn of September and October. They are shiny and round, resembling peas in size and shape. They remain on the shoots until the first frosts.
Growing conditions and requirements – The 'Nova Serotina' honeysuckle is a plant with very low requirements. It tolerates almost any conditions and positions. However, it grows best in sunny spots, where it blooms profusely. 'Nova Serotina' can also be planted in partial shade. It grows well in fresh and humus-rich soils, but can be planted in ordinary garden soil. It is important that the soil is not too dry or acidic.
Care – This variety of Pomeranian honeysuckle is fully frost-resistant and tolerates Polish winters well. However, during harsh winters, it may suffer from frost damage. Therefore, young plants should be covered for the winter in the first year after planting. 'Nova Serotina' does not require special care. Pruning should be done every 5-6 years to rejuvenate the plant. Only old, dry, or excessively long shoots should be pruned. If the plant freezes after a severe winter, damaged shoots should be pruned back strongly in spring, as they regrow quickly.
During the summer, when drought occurs or if the honeysuckle grows in an excessively sunny, dry location, its young shoots may be attacked by aphids. If they appear, they should be controlled quickly, as they can rapidly infest the vines and cause distortions and discoloration of the flowers.
Application – Lonicera periclymenum 'Nova Serotina' is an impressive vine with many uses. It is especially suitable for fences, pergolas, trellises, openwork walls of gazebos, and all kinds of supports. It can also be planted in pots placed on balconies or terraces.
