An ornamental shrub originating from East Asia with a stiff and upright habit. The target height of the variety is 3 m, but under Polish conditions, it grows up to 1.5 m. It is a slow-growing shrub. The variety is exceptionally easy to cultivate and low-maintenance, earning the title of a maintenance-free shrub. Like most representatives of the species, the Syrian hibiscus Maike is not very frost-resistant and requires winter covering. It blooms profusely at the turn of summer and autumn. Pink-red, large flowers are the main decoration of the shrub. It prefers warm, sunny, and wind-sheltered locations. Hibiscus requires regular watering as it does not tolerate drying out. The soil should be fertile, permeable, moderately moist, and either alkaline or neutral in pH.
Blooming – The hibiscus Maike blooms very abundantly from August to September. The flowers consist of five large petals and numerous smaller, elongated ones growing in the center. They have a dark pink color with a characteristic hibiscus eye in the inner part of the large petals. In the Maike variety, these spots are red. The decorative 3-lobed leaves are also noteworthy, with coarse serrations. In spring and summer, they are dark green, turn yellow in autumn, and fall off in winter.

Conditions and requirements – For growing the Syrian hibiscus Maike, it is best to choose a sunny, warm, and wind-protected location. It thrives on fertile, humus-rich, and well-drained soil, with a pH ranging from slightly acidic to alkaline. The shrub requires a moderately moist position. When planted in poor soils, the shrub blooms very poorly.
Care – The shrub requires constant but moderate watering. During drought, brown spots appear on the leaves. The Syrian hibiscus Maike is a slow-growing variety and therefore does not require pruning. Rejuvenating pruning is recommended in March or April, removing old shoots. The hibiscus is a heat-loving plant and not very frost-resistant. Therefore, during winter, the shrubs require covering. Young shrubs are most vulnerable to frost. To protect the plant, a mound of dry leaves or pine needles should be built at the base, and soil should be heaped to a height of about 30 cm. During the blooming period, it is recommended to fertilize the shrubs, preferably with organic fertilizers.
Application – Due to its lush, long blooming and, above all, its beautiful flowers, the Syrian hibiscus Maike is best planted in prominent locations in gardens and parks. It is also suitable as a potted plant, making it an excellent decoration for balconies and terraces.
It looks stunning planted individually or in groups with other plants. It is also successfully used as an informal hedge.
