It is a perennial, leafy climbing herb native to southern China. In these regions, according to people from the Guizhou province, it is described as the "herb of immortality." It is also known as "five-leaf ginseng." It contains vitamins and minerals such as selenium, zinc, iron, manganese, phosphorus, and amino acids. It is moderately frost-resistant (down to -15°C). In colder regions of Poland, it should be well-covered for winter, e.g., with straw or fine bark.
This plant prefers a location with a large amount of diffused light. Strong sunlight may damage the plant. It thrives in fertile, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. It requires regular pruning and support. This plant produces new shoots from the ground, starting from the root.
Application: Jiaogulan herb is a cleansing agent, which detoxifies the body from toxic substances, with a slightly bitter taste. It can grow in the ground as well as in containers on terraces. It can also be grown indoors year-round in a well-lit place. It reaches a length of 4-8m.
Fruiting and flowering: The inflorescences are drooping, made up of small (2-3mm) yellow-green flowers. It blooms in August and September. The fruits are inedible, round berries with a diameter of 5-8mm. They are dark green at first, then almost black when they ripen.
Care: It should be carefully covered for winter protection against frost. Requires a well-lit but not overly sunny spot. Needs well-draining soil. Frequent watering is necessary.
Pruning: This herb is a climbing perennial, so in early spring, all plant shoots grown in the ground should be cut just above the soil. Pruning during the growing season encourages better branching of the plant.
