Cabernet Franc is a red grape variety originating from France, widely used for blending (e.g. with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot). A moderately vigorous vine reaching 3–5 m in height, undemanding and tolerant of site and soil. Dark blue fruits ripen in autumn. It prefers fertile, sandy-loam, slightly moist soil.
Flowering: An early-flowering grapevine variety. Small, light-coloured flowers appear at the beginning of May and are gathered in small panicles about 10–15 cm long. A self-pollinating variety. The leaves are medium-sized, 5-lobed, slightly serrated, with moderately deep lateral sinuses. In summer they are intensely green, and in autumn they turn golden yellow.
Ripening and fruiting: Cabernet Franc is a mid-early ripening variety. Harvest can begin in the first half of October. The clusters are small, cylindrical-conical, composed of round, small berries of an intense blue colour. The fruits are sweet with a thin, delicate skin.
Growing conditions / requirements: Like most grape varieties, Cabernet Franc requires sunny or semi-shaded positions, sheltered from the wind. Good access to sunlight has a positive effect on plant growth and abundant yields. The variety is quite tolerant of soil conditions and prefers stony or sandy substrates.
Care: The vine has no special requirements regarding the training system. It produces good yields when pruned to 4 or 5 buds. The first two buds from the base are often infertile. A low-maint
