Cabernet Franc – a red grape variety of *Vitis vinifera*, originating from France. One of the most commonly cultivated varieties, mainly used in blends with grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. A medium-growing vine reaching a typical height of 3 to 5 meters. Easy to grow and highly tolerant of various locations and soil types. Cabernet Franc flowers early. Dark blue fruits appear at the end of summer, fully ripen in autumn, and may remain on the vine until winter. The best soil for grapevines is fertile, sandy-loamy, and slightly moist.
Flowering: An early-flowering grapevine variety. Small, light-colored flowers appear at the beginning of May. They are gathered in small panicles about 10–15 cm long. Self-pollinating variety. Leaves are medium-sized, 5-lobed, slightly serrated, with moderately deep lateral sinuses. In summer, they are intense green and turn golden yellow in autumn.
Ripening and fruiting: Cabernet Franc is a mid-early ripening grapevine. Harvest begins in the first half of October. Clusters are small, cylindrical-conical in shape, composed of round, small berries of intense blue color. Fruits are sweet with thin, delicate skin.
Growing conditions and requirements: Like most cultivars, Cabernet Franc requires sunny or partially shaded locations, sheltered from wind. Good sun exposure positively influences growth and yield. This variety tolerates different soils well, preferring stony or sandy ground.
Care: The vine does not require specific training forms. It yields well when pruned to 4 or 5 buds. The first two buds near the base are often non-fruiting. A low-maintenance variety, highly resistant to diseases and low temperatures. Despite its high frost resistance, it is sensitive to late spring frosts due to early flowering.
Use: Cabernet Franc is primarily used to produce light and aromatic wines. Depending on the growing region and winemaking techniques, it develops aromas of red fruits, chocolate, currants, and even licorice and spices.
Suitable for home gardens and container cultivation.
