“Pinot Blanc” is a productive, fast-growing grape variety, the white counterpart of the classic Pinot Noir. It is frost-hardy and well suited to cooler climates. It prefers warm, sunny and sheltered positions and fertile, sandy-loam, slightly moist soil.
Flowering: The Pinot Blanc variety blooms already in May. Small, light-coloured flowers are gathered in panicles usually 10–20 cm long.
Ripening and fruiting: In Polish conditions it ripens late, in October. The clusters are small, but the flesh is very soft, sweet and colourless. The leaves are medium-sized, light green, with three or five delicate lobes.
Conditions and requirements: Requires a well-sunlit and sheltered position. Pinot Blanc needs deep, calcareous, moderately fertile and relatively warm soils with a slightly acidic pH. It should not be planted in soils that are too dry, shallow and poor, nor in heavy, cold and overly fertile soils, as it then grows and fruits poorly.
Care: The vine is frost-hardy and withstands temperatures down to -20°C. Spring pruning of shoots to 6–12 buds is recommended. This allows faster regeneration, vigorous growth and abundant fruiting.
Use: Pinot Blanc usually has a fruity aroma. In vineyards it is often used to obtain grapes for quality wines. Pinot Blanc wines are high-quality, full-bodied, with balanced acidity, a delicate bouquet (ripe pear, peach, hazelnuts)
