Rondo is a dark-fruited grape variety used for making red wine. It is of German–Czech origin and comes from a cross between the varieties Zarya Severa and Saint Laurent. It grows to about 1–1.5 m in height. It is characterised by fairly strong growth and high productivity. Rondo is a frost-hardy variety, resistant down to about -23°C. It shows medium resistance to fungal diseases. The wine is of very good quality, with a beautiful ruby colour and a pleasant cherry aroma. Rondo is also suitable for direct consumption.
Ripening: Early ripening variety; harvest for wine usually takes place in mid-September. The fruits are medium-sized and dark blue. The leaves are large and quite stiff.
Care: At the beginning of November, cover the vines with soil (or peat), making a mound about 30 cm high over each plant, protecting several of the lowest buds. In the first year after planting, train the plant to one shoot. Pruning in subsequent years depends on the chosen training and pruning method.
Planting: Plant 10–15 cm deeper than it grew in the pot. Smaller plants should be planted in a hollow and covered with soil only in autumn. This method significantly increases the frost resistance of the vines.
