A perennial shrub originating from Northern Ireland. The ‘Lynwood’ variety initially grows upright, with narrow and slender shoots. In the following year, the shoots branch out and arch to the sides. The shrub reaches about 2–3 m in height and width. Its annual growth is typical for the species, amounting to about 30 cm. The plant is highly resistant, even to periodic droughts. It is not attacked by pests and rarely becomes diseased. Easy to cultivate, it has no special soil requirements and can be planted almost anywhere. However, it develops best in fertile soils with moderate moisture and a pH ranging from slightly acidic to mildly alkaline. It requires a sunny or lightly shaded location. In sheltered spots, it blooms even up to two weeks earlier.
Blooming – The flowering is very abundant and begins at the end of March or the beginning of April.
Along the entire length of the leafless branches, the first dark yellow flowers appear with broad petals, about 5 cm long. The leaves are simple, arranged oppositely on the shoots, and intensely green. They are shaped like ellipses, tapering at both ends, and measure from 6 to 10 cm in length. In autumn, they undergo a slight color change.
Maturation and fruiting – not applicable.
Growing conditions and requirements – the ‘Lynwood’ variety is easy to grow, has no special soil requirements, and can be planted almost anywhere. However, it develops best in fertile soils with moderate moisture and a pH ranging from slightly acidic to mildly alkaline. It requires a sunny or slightly shaded location. In sites sheltered from the wind, it even blooms up to two weeks earlier.
Care – To limit its growth and maintain an attractive shape, regular pruning of the shrub is recommended. Shaping should ideally be carried out twice a year. The first pruning is done immediately after the flowering period, usually at about 2/3 of the length of the spent shoots. This practice results in a denser shrub. A second pruning can be done at the beginning of summer to stimulate the one-year shoots to branch out.
Despite its low requirements, it is advisable to fertilize the shrubs in spring and summer, but no later than the end of August.
Application – Thanks to its decorative qualities and ease of cultivation, the ‘Lynwood’ variety is ideal for planting in both urban green spaces and domestic gardens. The shrubs look most impressive when planted in groups. Cut branches can also serve as decoration since they will flower indoors when simply placed in a vase with water.
