Common fig ‘Brown Turkey’ / Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’

This impressive shrub or small tree grows up to 2–3 meters tall and is self-fertile, meaning it does not need another plant to produce fruit.

Use: In Polish and similar climates, figs perform best in containers on terraces or balconies — especially during the first 2–3 years. They can also be planted into the ground, which allows you to enjoy them in the garden while protecting the roots from frost.

Flowering and fruiting:

• Flowers in early spring before leaves appear — with small yellow flowers (March–April).
• Fruits are very large, with purple-brown skin and pink, juicy flesh with a rich, intense flavor.
• The leaves are also decorative — large, slightly concave and deeply lobed.
• With proper fertilization, fruits ripen by the end of September and reach impressive size.

Care:

• Position: sunny and sheltered from wind.
• Soil: well-drained, humus-rich, fertile.
• Watering: regular during growth, limited during fruit ripening (to prevent cracking).
• Fertilization: moderate — excess fertilization may reduce fruiting.
