Evodia is a tree species native to Asia, belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is grown as an ornamental plant due to its beautiful green leaves with a herbal scent, its abundant flowering, and red fruits, reaching up to 5-6 meters in height.
The velvet evodia has a round crown with upright shoots. Its trunk has numerous stems covered with intensely green leaves. It produces large leaves growing up to 30 cm. The bark is light gray with a smooth finish. Its branches and leaves are covered with a "velvety" fuzz, which is where it gets its name, velvet evodia. It blooms from August to September. After three years, it starts flowering, covering itself with tiny white flowers gathered in umbels. The flowers of Evodia are nectar-rich and attract many bees.
Initially, the fruits are pink, then turn red, and finally black. They ripen in October. It is a heat-loving plant due to its natural origin. It prefers a sunny, warm spot or partial shade. It will grow well in moderately rich and moderately moist soil. Occasionally, it can be fertilized with lime.
Evodia is frost-resistant, but young shoots on young plants may freeze. However, in spring, fresh shoots will appear again. It is important to cover young plants for the winter.
