The flowering quince ‘Nivalis’ (Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Nivalis’) is a hardy, thorny ornamental shrub with exceptionally pure snow‑white flowers. It grows up to about 2 m in height and width, forming a dense, spreading habit that fills space in the garden very well. The flowers appear in early spring, often even before the leaves, creating the effect of a bright white cloud against the backdrop of awakening vegetation.

Characteristics of the variety

Flowering and fruits

‘Nivalis’ blooms abundantly in April and May on last year’s shoots. The flowers are large, pure white, gathered in small clusters. In autumn, the plant forms numerous hard yellow‑green fruits that are suitable for preserves, liqueurs, jellies and aromatic jams. The fruits remain on the shoots for a long time, adding ornamental value to the shrub even after the season.

Requirements and position

The plant grows best in a sunny position, in fertile, well‑drained and moderately moist soil. However, it is very tolerant — it copes well with poorer soils, withstands periodic droughts and urban conditions. Fully frost‑hardy in the Polish climate, resistant to diseases and low‑maintenance.

Use in the garden

The ‘Nivalis’ flowering quince works very well in borders, naturalistic gardens, oriental gardens and as a specimen plant. Thanks to its thorny shoots, it can be used as a low defensive hedge. It combines perfectly with spring shrubs and perennials, creating attractive colour compositions.
