Red currant shrubs grow up to about 1.8 m tall. Red currant fruits contain more vitamin C than lemons! Red currants are not demanding and grow well in most garden soils, except for calcareous ones. However, they fruit best in sandy-loamy, slightly acidic soil with a pH of 5.5–6.5. They prefer sunny locations but can also grow in light shade. They are fully frost-resistant.

'Jonkheer van Tets' is a Dutch red currant variety. The shrubs grow up to around 1.8 meters tall. Red currants contain more vitamin C than lemons! Frost resistant.

Use: The fruits are suitable for fresh consumption and for processing into preserves, juices, liqueurs, jams, and jellies.

Flowering and fruiting: Flowers appear in April and are yellow. The fruits are round, red, and form long clusters. Red varieties bear fruit earlier than black ones, usually from early July to August. Red currants are very healthy – rich in vitamin C, P, B vitamins, provitamin A, biotin, and folic acid. They also contain minerals such as potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, and trace elements like manganese, boron, and iodine.

Care: Requires fertile soil with slightly acidic pH. Fertilizing is beneficial. Prefers sunny or semi-shaded, wind-protected locations. Plant the shrub deeper than it was growing in the pot. Plant young shrubs in autumn or early spring, spacing them 1–1.5 meters apart.

Pruning: After planting, cut the seedling back to 2–3 buds. This will promote 6–9 new shoots in the first year. In following years, thin out the bush to prevent overcrowding. Red currants bear fruit mainly on short shoots, so good branching is important. The best fruit appears on 2-, 3-, and 4-year-old skeletal branches. Do not cut one-year-old shoots — remove only old 5- to 6-year-old ones. For the first 5 years after planting, cut back one-year-old shoots by half. Completely remove weak, crossing, or sprawling branches. In the 6th year, in March or after harvest, cut the oldest 5-year-old shoots and replace them with an equal number of new ones, shortened to encourage branching. The shrub should then have 3–4 shoots each of 1, 2, 3, and 4 years old. Maintaining this balance is key to abundant yields.
