This plant has attractive, large panicle-shaped flowers. The inflorescences resemble lilacs – hence the name “southern lilac.” Flowers remain on the plant for three to four months. In our climate, it blooms only at the end of summer, which is very impressive for a shrub.
It grows as a small tree or large shrub with a spreading crown, reaching 1.5–2 m in height in our conditions. Apart from the flowers, its small oval leaves, turning yellow in autumn, are also decorative.
The plant tolerates moderate frosts (around –18 °C) but prefers a warmer climate. It should be planted in a location sheltered from strong, cold winds. Plant outdoors in spring. Both young and older plants should be protected in winter, with the soil mulched with a thick layer of bark.
