It has upright fruiting shoots and stoloniferous stems that spread shallowly above the ground, forming an evergreen carpet. A low, fast-growing shrub reaching 0.3 m in height, with stolons growing up to 1.5 m long. This variety is easy to grow and low-maintenance. It is resistant to diseases, pests, and frost, and performs well in Polish conditions. It fruits in autumn, producing large, dark red, and very healthy berries. Flowering: Cranberry blooms from June to July. The flowers are small, single, and pink in color.

Ripening and fruiting: Medium to large, oval fruits appear on the shrub in autumn. The fruiting period lasts about two months starting in September. The dark red fruits have a crisp, slightly tart flesh and are very durable, allowing for long storage after harvest.

Conditions and requirements: 'Howes' cranberry should be planted in sunny or lightly shaded locations. It prefers moist or even wet soil. When planted in moderately moist soil, it requires regular watering. The soil should be humus-rich and acidic.

Care: A very easy-to-grow variety, well adapted to our climate. Cranberry seedlings should be planted 25 cm apart. Once planted, the shrubs quickly produce creeping stems that root easily and form dense, carpet-like growth. 'Howes' cranberry prefers moist habitats and tolerates temporary, complete waterlogging. During hot weather, it requires abundant, regular watering.
In spring, the shrubs may need additional fertilizing with slightly acidifying fertilizers. A healthy variety, rarely attacked by pests or diseases, and resistant to low temperatures.
The shrub does not require regular pruning. Every 2–3 years in spring, it is recommended to trim the longest horizontal stems to the same length. Care should be taken not to damage the shorter upright fruiting shoots.

Use: The 'Howes' cranberry shrub is ideal for home garden cultivation. Its creeping habit allows the creation of unique groundcover carpets that are attractive year-round. The fruits have a wide range of uses in both cooking and medicine. They contain active substances that help prevent various diseases, from colds and heart conditions to digestive tract infections. Cranberries are perfect for preserves like juices, jams, smoothies, and liqueurs. They can also be eaten dried, as a sauce, or served with meat dishes.
