Purple Cotoneaster ‘Tangstedt’ (Cotoneaster atropurpureus) is a highly decorative ground‑cover shrub valued for its colourful foliage and abundant fruiting. It is versatile, hardy and perfect for home gardens as well as urban landscaping.
‘Tangstedt’ forms dense mounds up to 40 cm high, often twice as wide. The shoots are covered with thick, heart‑shaped, light‑green leaves that turn deep purple in autumn. In late spring, the shrub produces small white flowers, followed by numerous orange‑red berries that remain decorative until winter.
Blooms from late May to June.
Best grown in sunny, warm locations for strong colouring and abundant fruiting.
Tolerates light shade.
Prefers well‑drained soil; avoid heavy, waterlogged ground.
Drought‑tolerant and suitable for low‑maintenance gardens.
Young plants benefit from winter protection (e.g., fleece).
Plant from spring to autumn, spacing 60–80 cm apart.
Ideal for:
rock gardens,
slopes and embankments (prevents erosion),
ground‑cover plantings,
naturalistic and urban landscapes.
