The Swedish cotoneaster (Cotoneaster × suecicus) ‘Coral Beauty’ is one of the most popular groundcover shrubs, valued for its dense, spreading habit and decorative foliage and fruit. The plant reaches about 50–60 cm in height and forms wide, compact mats that effectively cover the soil and suppress weeds. Its dark, glossy, semi-evergreen leaves remain on the branches for most of the winter, keeping the plant attractive even outside the growing season.
Year-round ornamental value In June, ‘Coral Beauty’ produces numerous small, single white flowers. After flowering, the shrub develops round, intensely red berries, which are its most striking feature. They persist for a long time, often into winter, contrasting beautifully with the dark foliage and attracting birds.
Growing requirements This variety is exceptionally undemanding, making it suitable for gardens of all types.
Key cultivation features:
Light: full sun or partial shade
Soil: any well-drained garden soil
pH: slightly acidic, neutral or slightly alkaline
Hardiness: very frost-resistant, tolerates short droughts
Care: minimal – no regular pruning needed
The plant performs well in urban conditions and on average soils, which increases its versatility.
Uses of ‘Coral Beauty’ Thanks to its spreading habit and semi-evergreen leaves, it is ideal as:
a groundcover for large areas
planting on slopes and walls
an element of rock gardens and borders
a background plant for light‑leaved shrubs
an ornamental shrub for home gardens and parks
Its combination of ornamental qualities, durability and ease of cultivation makes it one of the most frequently chosen groundcover shrubs.
