A very profusely flowering variety from mid-May to July and again in late August. Flowers are initially pale yellow and gradually turn white as they open. Looks best against a dark background. Suitable for growing in containers. Grows moderately vigorously, reaching 2 m in height. Perfect for arbors, pergolas, trellises and fences. Prefers warm, sunny or semi-shaded sites protected from cold and strong winds. Soil should be fertile, humus-rich, moist, with a pH of 6.0–7.0.
Large flowers, 12–15 cm in diameter, initially pale yellow and turning white after opening, with a greenish central stripe; composed of 8 overlapping tepals. Stamens have yellow anthers on white filaments. Leaves are usually compound, trifoliate. The vine climbs using its leaf petioles.
Suitable for semi-shaded positions, dislikes heat. In full sun and hot locations it flowers for a shorter period and the blooms fade. Grows well in fertile, moist, well-drained soil, but after enrichment it tolerates most average garden soils. Soil pH should be neutral to slightly acidic. Hardy (zones 4–9).
Plant in a 60 × 60 × 60 cm hole filled with fertile soil and a 10 cm drainage layer at the bottom, 5–10 cm deeper than it grew in the container. Pruning is light. At the turn of February and March remove dead shoots and lightly trim the living ones: in the first year to 30 cm above ground, in the second to 70 cm, and in the following years to 150 cm. Feed in mid-April with slow-release fertiliser (e.g. Osmocote 5–6M). Water during the season.
Recommended for growing on trellises, stakes and other garden supports. Looks best against a dark background. Suitable for container cultivation.
