Application: Reaches a height of 2–3.5 m. It climbs supports using its leaf petioles. Suitable for growing along fences, arbours, trellises, stakes and other garden structures.
Flowering: Deep burgundy, velvety flowers, 15–20 cm in diameter. They are borne on long stalks, beautifully shaped with 6 broad tepals and semicircular coffee‑coloured anthers on yellow filaments, which together with the yellow pistils brighten the flowers. The underside of the tepals has a whitish central stripe and pink edges. Blooms from late June to September.
Exposure: Any.
Care: Prefers airy locations. Dislikes drying soil. The soil must be fertile and moist, preferably slightly alkaline.
Frost resistance: In winter, it is advisable to cover the base of the plant with a mound of leaves or conifer needles, topped with soil up to 25–30 cm. In summer, water 2–3 times a week.
Pruning: Spring flowering occurs on last year’s shoots, so at the turn of February and March remove dead and diseased stems, and prune healthy ones lightly: in the first year 30 cm above the ground above strong buds, in the second year 70 cm, and in subsequent years 150 cm above the ground.
