A long‑lived and frost‑resistant tree (down to –30°C) from the beech family, reaching 20–30 m in height. Its leaves are hard, glossy, with serrated edges; in autumn they turn yellow and fall for winter.
Use: Suitable as a solitary tree in large gardens and parks.
Flowering and fruiting: Flowering occurs in June and July. The greenish‑yellow flowers form elongated catkins. Male flowers are located in the upper part of the inflorescence, female ones in the lower part. Fruits are harvested from October to November. They are edible, tasty, floury and sweet — excellent raw or roasted.
Care: Plant in a sunny, sheltered location protected from strong winds. Grows best in fertile, well‑drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil.
Pruning: Does not require pruning. In spring, frozen shoots may be removed, but only once the first buds appear.
