A long-lived and frost-resistant tree (up to –30°C) from the beech family, growing up to 20–30 m tall. Leaves are hard, glossy, with serrated edges, turning yellow in autumn and falling off for winter.

Use: Suitable as a solitary tree in large gardens and parks.

Flowering and fruiting: Blooms in June and July. The greenish-yellow flowers are gathered in elongated inflorescences. Male flowers are located at the top, female flowers at the base. Fruits are harvested in October–November. The nuts are edible, tasty, floury, and sweet. They can be eaten raw or roasted.

Care: Should be planted in a sunny and wind-sheltered location. Grows best in fertile, well-drained soils that are slightly acidic to neutral.

Pruning: Does not require pruning. In spring, frozen shoots may be removed, but only once the first buds appear on the tree.
