Catalpa, also known as the Northern Catalpa, is an ornamental tree. It is one of the most popular garden plants. Its decorative appearance makes it the highlight of our garden. The characteristic feature of Catalpa are large, heart-shaped leaves, as well as unique flowers that appear in the summer. From the flower clusters, long, thin bean-like fruits develop. Inside the fruits, there are seeds from which we can propagate the tree. Catalpas can grow up to 20 meters in height. This beautiful tree with an exotic look, although native to distant countries, adapts well to our climate.
It thrives in fertile, light, and well-drained soil. Catalpa prefers moist soil, so it should be watered on hot days. However, it is not recommended to plant it in waterlogged areas as this can cause it to freeze in the winter. It requires a warm and sunny position, as it grows and flowers best in such conditions. It also prefers a sheltered position, protected from strong winds. Catalpas do not require pruning, although young trees can have their crowns shaped to encourage branching. In spring, it is worth fertilizing them. These trees are frost-resistant, but young specimens should be protected from the cold before winter, for example, by using a straw mat.
