It is a fast-growing shrub with lush, upright, yet slightly arching shoots. It reaches a height of about 2 meters. Its leaves are lanceolate, with a white-gray felt-like coating underneath. The intense fragrance of the flowers attracts hundreds of butterflies, which is why Buddleja is often referred to as the butterfly bush. Due to its low sensitivity to pollution, it is very well suited for decorating urban areas. It is not frost-hardy, so it needs to be protected for the winter. It prefers warm, sunny, and wind-sheltered locations. This Buddleja requires fertile, well-drained soil.
Flowering: the shrub blooms from July to September. Its flowers, similar to lilacs, are dark purple-violet in color, with a shade that slightly leans toward black. They are gathered in panicles about 40 cm long. Thanks to their pleasant scent, they attract numerous bees and butterflies. Flowering occurs on new shoots.
Ripening and fruiting: not applicable
Growing conditions and requirements: the best location for the shrub is a sunny, warm spot sheltered from the wind. The plant should be planted in fertile, humus-rich, and sufficiently moist soils. During heatwaves, it needs abundant watering. This Buddleja variety is tolerant of soil pH.
Care: the shrub is not very frost-hardy, so it is recommended to cover its base for the winter. Dry leaves or pine bark work well for this purpose. In spring, even after a mild winter, low pruning of the shoots is advisable to improve the plant's shape and encourage abundant flowering within the same year.
Use: Buddleja is particularly used in home gardens, both as a solitary plant and in groups. It pairs well with other plants. The flowers are suitable for cutting and bouquet arrangements.
