Flowering: The first flower buds appear already at the end of June. Flowering lasts from July until the end of September. Small violet flowers, resembling lilac blossoms, are gathered in very impressive, long, conical panicles reaching 40–60 cm in length. The flowers develop gradually, first on the main shoots and then on the side shoots. Thanks to its strong fragrance, the shrub attracts insects, especially butterflies.

Ripening and fruiting: not applicable

Growing conditions and requirements: Buddleja davidii ‘Ile de France’ requires warm and sunny positions. It grows best in places sheltered from the wind. It should be planted in fertile, well-drained soils with a neutral or slightly acidic pH.

Care: Shrubs of this variety should not be watered too abundantly, as their roots are sensitive to lack of air. However, during drought periods irrigation is recommended. Buddleja ‘Ile de France’ is sensitive to frost, therefore in late autumn the base of the shrubs should be covered with pine bark or leaves to protect against freezing. In spring, it is sufficient to cut the plant back low to the ground and feed it with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser. This treatment promotes the formation of young shoots, maintains a nice shrub shape and ensures abundant flowering. To extend the flowering period, it is recommended to regularly remove faded flower panicles.

Use: Thanks to its lush flowering, Buddleja looks perfect in exposed places. It can be planted both singly and in groups. It is resistant to pollution, therefore it is also suitable for use in urban greenery.
