In Polish conditions, Buddleja davidii 'Nanho Blue' reaches 1 to 2 meters in height. Its small blue flowers, gathered in long panicles about 20 cm long, are strongly fragrant and grow at the ends of the shoots, providing a beautiful garden decoration. Leaves are opposite, lanceolate, and covered underneath with a white down giving a grayish, bluish, or silvery appearance. The leaves fall in winter. It is not frost-hardy and must be protected during winter. Prefers a warm, sunny, and wind-sheltered location. Requires fertile, well-drained soil.
Care and requirements: This shrub prefers fertile, loamy-sandy soil with a near-neutral pH. It grows well in warm, sunny, and sheltered spots. The variety is drought- and heat-tolerant. Has high nutrient needs – fertilize 2–3 times during the growing season with multi-component fertilizers. Not very frost-hardy – in harsh winters it may freeze, so it should be protected with a mound of soil, bark, sawdust, or leaves.
Flowering: Very abundant and long-lasting flowering from July to September. The flowers are highly ornamental and strongly fragrant, attracting butterflies and other insects. In some countries, it is called the "butterfly bush". Blooms on current-year shoots.
Pruning: It is recommended to prune it back hard (ideally in April–May, right after removing winter protection). After flowering, cut back the shoots by half to prevent snow damage to branches.
Uses: Buddleja davidii is ideal for planting near patios, terraces, or in front of houses due to its decorative character and enchanting appearance. Recommended for home gardens, either as a solitary shrub or in groups, combined with other plants.
