Buddleja davidii 'Nanho Blue' grows to 1–2 m in height in Polish conditions. Its small blue flowers are gathered in long panicles about 20 cm long, with a very intense fragrance, growing at the ends of the shoots. The leaves are opposite, lance-shaped, greyish-silver underneath and fall for winter. It is not fully frost-hardy and requires winter protection. It prefers warm, sunny and sheltered positions and fertile, well-drained soil.
Care and requirements: This shrub prefers fertile, loamy-sandy soil with a near-neutral pH. It grows best in warm, sheltered and sunny locations. The variety is resistant to drought and heat. It has high nutritional requirements, so during the growing season it should be fertilised 2–3 times with multi-component fertilisers. Unfortunately, it is not very frost-hardy. This Buddleja species is relatively hardy, but in severe winters it may freeze, so it should be protected with a mound of soil, bark, sawdust or leaves.
Flowering: The shrub blooms very abundantly and for a long time, starting in July and finishing in September. The flowers are very decorative and strongly fragrant, which attracts butterflies and other insects. In some countries it is called the “butterfly bush”. It blooms on current-year shoots.
Pruning: It is recommended to prune it back hard (preferably in late April or early May, right after removing the winter mound). After flowering, it is advisable to cut the shoots back by half so that the coming snow does not break the branches.
Use: Buddleja davidii is perfect for planting near gazebos, terraces or at the front of houses, as it is a very ornamental shrub and adds a magical charm. Recommended for home gardens, planted singly or in groups, in compositions with other plants.
