A vigorous shrub with upright shoots, reaching about 2 m in height within a year. Lance-shaped leaves with white felt-like undersides. Blooms on current-year shoots. The fragrant, dark purplish-red flowers are arranged in panicles about 30 cm long, attracting bees and butterflies (the “butterfly bush”). Flowering from July to September. Not frost-hardy – requires winter protection. Prefers warm, sunny, and sheltered locations. Grows best in fertile, well-drained soil.

Frost resistance is limited, so it's advisable to cover the base of the shrub. Even after a mild winter, pruning low encourages a better shape and abundant flowering the same year. Thrives in warm, sheltered, sunny spots with fertile, moderately moist soil. A valuable species for its long and late blooming period. Ideal for home gardens, planted alone or in groups, and in mixed compositions.
