American blueberry Elizabeth belongs to the highbush blueberry varieties. It is considered the tastiest among them.
In Western Europe, it is valued for its late and abundant fruiting. It is especially recommended for commercial plantations, but also for gardens and amateur cultivation. The shrub grows very vigorously, reaching a height of 160-180 cm. The location should be sunny, sheltered from the wind, and the soil should be well-drained. Blueberries prefer acidic soil. Blueberries like plenty of moisture, but they do not like being waterlogged.

The fruits are very large, round, slightly flattened, light blue, gathered in small, loose clusters. The flesh is greenish, firm, sweet‑wine in flavour, aromatic and tasty. They ripen already in July and retain their aroma and flavour until the end of summer. Suitable for fresh consumption, processing and freezing. The variety forms dense shrubs 1.5–2 m tall, with an upright habit. As a highbush blueberry, it requires cross‑pollination, so planting in groups is recommended. The best companion varieties are ‘Bluecrop’, ‘Bluegold’ or ‘Legacy’. Use: Plant shrubs 2–2.5 m apart. Before planting, enrich the soil with acidic high peat. After planting, mulch with conifer bark or sawdust. Fully frost‑resistant, withstanding −28°C to −34°C. Fruiting: Blooms in spring. Fruits begin to ripen in July, with a ripening period of about 3 weeks. Yields reach up to 6 kg per shrub. The berries are large, aromatic and very tasty, borne in loose clusters (similar to the ‘Spartan’ variety). Ripe fruits remain on the bush for a long time without falling; harvesting is manual. Care: Prefers sunny to semi‑shaded, wind‑sheltered locations. Grows well on forest‑edge plots. Soil should be humus‑rich, light, well‑drained, acidic (pH 3.5–4) and moist. Due to high water demand during the growing season, groundwater should be relatively high (40–60 cm). During droughts, regular watering is essential. Pruning: Do not prune after planting. The first corrective pruning is done after four years; until then, remove only dead or diseased shoots. Older shrubs require stronger pruning. The fruits tolerate transport well.
