This is a highbush blueberry. ‘Duke’ is a fruit shrub of very vigorous growth and early, abundant fruiting. It ripens about 10 days earlier than ‘Bluecrop’. The berries vary in size — the first very large, the later medium. Thanks to their firmness, they store and transport well. Shoots are stiff and upright. ‘Duke’ is comparable to ‘Bluecrop’. The site should be sunny and sheltered from wind, and the soil well‑drained. Blueberries prefer acidic soil and plenty of moisture, but not waterlogging.

This is a so‑called highbush blueberry. ‘Duke’ is a fruit‑bearing shrub belonging to the American blueberry species, characterised by very vigorous growth and early, abundant fruiting. It begins to ripen about 10 days earlier than the ‘Bluecrop’ variety. The berries vary in size — the first are very large, the later ones medium‑sized. Thanks to their high firmness, they store and transport extremely well. The shoots are stiff and upright, and the growth is very strong. ‘Duke’ is comparable to the ‘Bluecrop’ variety. Recommended for fresh consumption, freezing and processing. Frost resistance down to −28 °C. After a few hours of cooling, the berries become even more aromatic. The variety is self‑fertile and does not require pollinators. Size: very vigorous growth, stiff shoots; shrubs reach 130–180 cm in height. Flowering and fruiting: blooms late, after spring frosts; flowers are white or pink. A very productive variety, with fruit ripening from early August. The first berries are large, round, light blue with a nice persistent bloom and firm skin; aromatic, sweet‑wine in flavour, borne in loose clusters; the stem scar is small. Leaves are fairly large, elliptical, leathery, dark green, strongly veined and glossy. Care: prefers sunny, wind‑sheltered locations. Soil should be well‑drained, light, fertile, slightly moist, with an acidic pH of 3.5–4. Mulching with sawdust or conifer bark is highly beneficial.
