The ‘Bluejay’ highbush blueberry belongs to mid‑season varieties and is valued for its suitability for mechanical harvesting. It is a long‑lived, easy‑to‑grow shrub that rewards with abundant fruiting. ‘Bluejay’ was created by crossing the varieties Berkeley and Michigan with Pioneer and Taylor. It is a vigorous shrub producing medium‑sized, light‑blue berries, resistant to frost and diseases. The plant grows strongly and is easy to manage, reaching up to 2 m in height. Use: The berries are firm, very aromatic, resistant to dropping and cracking, and excellent for long storage in fresh form as well as for all types of preserves. Eating fresh blueberries supports the prevention of lifestyle diseases, arteriosclerosis and cancer. In the garden, the shrub can also serve as an attractive ornamental element. Flowering and fruiting: It flowers relatively late, producing white or slightly pink flowers. The first ripe berries appear at the end of July, with most ripening in August — about 70% of the crop ripens in the first flush. The fruits are spherical, medium‑sized, light blue, smooth, firm, very aromatic and extremely numerous, remaining on the shoots for a long time and resistant to cracking. Leaves are fairly large and light green. Harvested berries stored in the refrigerator remain fresh for up to 10 weeks. Care: Requires a sunny, wind‑sheltered position. Recommended soil is light, well‑drained and strongly acidic. The variety is frost‑resistant from –28 °C to –34 °C. Fertilise with blueberry or conifer fertiliser. Before planting, fill the planting hole with acidic soil; after planting, cover the soil around the shrub with bark. Pruning: Requires intensive pruning and good watering, as the variety is sensitive to drought, which causes fruit to become smaller.
